At least 20 people have been injured after a magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck central Japan early on Sunday, authorities said. The tremor hit at 01:04 local time, with its epicentre in the western part of Shizuoka Prefecture, at a depth of about 40km, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
The strongest shaking was recorded in Chita, in Aichi Prefecture, where the quake registered upper 5 on Japan’s seismic intensity scale.
Lower 5 intensity was recorded in parts of Aichi, Nagano and Gifu prefectures. The earthquake was felt across a wide area near Aichi, and smaller aftershocks followed.
The Japanese government set up a liaison office to coordinate its response to the earthquake. The JMA said there was no risk of a tsunami following the tremor.
