₹134 Crore Budget, Up To ₹382 Crore At Stake: Why India Can’t Afford To Abandon Gianni Infantino

  • August 8, 2026

Despite opposition from UEFA and CONCACAF, India remains supportive of Gianni Infantino due to its financial dependency on FIFA’s funding. The AIFF’s limited budget highlights its reliance on FIFA’s Forward development program, which offers significant financial support.

India has no option but to quietly support Gianni Infantino (AI Initiative)

Gianni Infantino is currently navigating the most volatile crisis of his FIFA presidency. Following immense global backlash, his administration faced an unprecedented revolt over the highly controversial proposal designed to secure billions through selling minor stakes of the FIFA World Cup to private investors promising massive cash injections to member nations. With UEFA and CONCACAF in open defiance, Infantino’s fate hangs in the balance with the Presidential elections soon. The FIFA president needs significant backing to get back in his current chair, and the All India Football Federation (AIFF) is reported to be supporting Infantino.

To the casual observer, it might look like India truly believes in Gianni Infantino’s vision. But once the layers of international sports diplomacy are peeled back, the reality is far more transactional. The AIFF’s loyalty isn’t built on shared ideals; it is built on a desperate need for survival, anchored by a multi-million-dollar lifeline from the global footballing body.

The Statistical Reality: A Tale of Two Budgets

Indian football operates under a severe, perpetual cash crunch. During its Annual General Meeting in July 2023, the AIFF passed a total domestic budget of just ₹134 crore for the 2023-24 financial year. While this was an increase from the previous year’s ₹87 crore, it remains a small amount to run a thriving national football ecosystem.

Unlike the massive European football associations leading the charge against Infantino, which generate billions independently through domestic TV rights and private sponsorships, the AIFF lacks a self-sustaining commercial safety net.
