A woman in Kanpur was reportedly confined to a room by her in-laws and bitten by a snake allegedly released due to unmet dowry demands. Police have registered a case against seven people, and an investigation is ongoing.
Enraged over the non-payment of dowry, a newlywed woman in Kanpur was allegedly locked inside a room, where they also released a snake. The woman’s condition deteriorated after being bitten, but the family did not help her. She was finally rushed to hospital after her sister intervened.
The incident took place on September 18 in the city’s Colonelganj.
The woman’s sister, Rizwana, said Reshma was locked in the room and the snake was released through the drain. Late at night, the snake bit Reshma on her leg.
She screamed in pain, but the family members did not open the door and stood outside laughing.
Somehow, Reshma managed to contact Rizwana by phone. Upon arrival, Rizwana found her in a critical condition and took her to a hospital, where she was admitted for urgent medical treatment.
Rizwana said that the problems began shortly after Reshma’s marriage to Shahnawaz on March 19, 2021.
Since the marriage, the in-laws had started taunting and harassing her over dowry. A while ago, the woman’s family had given Rs 1.5 lakh, but as the demand for an additional Rs 5 lakh was not met, the dispute intensified.
