Actress Samantha’s dreamy pictures from her temple wedding with filmmaker Raj are all over the Internet. But what truly has fans buzzing is her massive wedding ring.
Known for her bold and edgy choices in life, Samantha brought that same spirit to her wedding ring. Instead of choosing a conventional wedding band or an extravagant solitaire, the actress opted for something far more exquisite and attention grabbing.
At first glance, Samantha’s wedding ring exudes an edgy, bold and geometric vibe. But there is more to it. We spoke to several jewellery designers to break down what makes this massive sparkling ring so special and to understand the craftsmanship behind the piece that sealed Samantha and Raj’s love story.
“It is made with portrait-cut diamonds – a large one in the centre, surrounded by smaller ones attached like petals. These diamonds are custom-cut. The kaarigar has to be shown the ring’s design first to cut them accordingly, and only then can the ring be made,” Hafsa Qureshi, founder of MISSHK Fine Jewellery, tells India Today.
A portrait-cut diamond is a very thin, flat diamond with a perfectly clear, transparent surface. Making one requires slicing the diamond extremely thin without breaking it, a skill only highly trained kaarigars or cutters possess. Because of this, portrait-cut diamonds are not mass-produced and are custom-made to fit a specific design or frame.
“The centre is a lozenge portrait-cut diamond of around 2 ct, and around it sit eight custom portrait-cut diamonds shaped like petals. It looks effortless on her hand, but the engineering behind it is extremely complex. Only a few workshops in the world cut and assemble portrait diamonds at this level,” says Priyanshu Goel, a jewellery expert and content creator, in an Instagram reel posted on Monday.

Art Deco era-inspired
Experts add that the ring draws inspiration from the Art Deco era, evident in its geometric cuts and architectural form.
“This approach draws from modernist and Art Deco design principles, where negative space, symmetry, and sculptural presence become as important as the stones themselves,” says Trishank Gupta, co-founder and managing director, Eleve Diamonds.
“It is set in either white gold or platinum, most often platinum because it is strong enough to hold these diamonds securely,” adds Hafsa.
Historically, platinum-cut diamonds were used in Mughal and Nizami jewellery.
Growing demand for unconventional designs
The edgy, modern design is poised to usher in a new genre of engagement rings in the Indian market.
“Samantha’s wedding ring stands out for its striking, contemporary design, characterised by clean, sculptural proportions and a high-impact silhouette. The centre stone features a portrait-cut diamond, prized in modern fine jewellery for its broad, elongated shape, refined mirror-like elegance, and wide visual spread,” says jewellery designer Varda Goenka, founder of Varda Goenka Fine Jewels by Diagold.
“Rings like this signal a strong shift towards architectural bridal jewellery, pieces defined by shape, silhouette and negative space rather than ornate detailing,” adds Ricky Vasandani, CEO and co-founder, Solitario.
