The Labor Department reported on Friday that the economy added 162,000 jobs in August. The unemployment rate stayed flat at 4.1%, matching where it stood the month before.
A Number That Beat the Forecasts
The scale of the beat is what stands out most. Economists had penciled in only about 53,000 new jobs for the month, so the actual figure came in more than three times higher than predicted.
That gap matters because recent months had stirred worry that hiring was cooling off faster than officials wanted. Friday’s report pushes back on that narrative and suggests employers are still willing to bring on staff.
Earlier Months Look Better Than First Thought
Along with the August numbers, the government revised its earlier estimates for June and July. Combined, those two months now show 55,000 more jobs added than originally reported.
That revision carries real weight. What had initially looked like a decline in hiring during that stretch has now been recalculated as a gain once the updated figures are factored in.
Which Industries Hired
Two areas stood out in August. Local government education jobs jumped by 42,000, largely making up for losses recorded the month before. Restaurants and bars also posted solid hiring gains during the month.
More People Are Looking for Work
There was also a shift in how many Americans are participating in the labor force. The participation rate, which tracks the share of the population either employed or actively job hunting, climbed to 61.6%. That reverses part of the slide the measure had been on recently.
What It Means for the Fed
The timing of this report is notable. Federal Reserve officials are weighing whether to raise interest rates later this month, and inflation, not employment, has become their main worry.
Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh addressed the labor market last week, saying modest job growth was to be expected given how little the labor supply is expanding. He described the broader economy as being in line with full employment.
