US President Donald Trump on Wednesday escalated the trade dispute with Canada, ordering new restrictions on Canadian products while raising tariffs on several others.
Under a new executive order, Canadian products including mattresses, motorboats and golf carts will face a 50 per cent tariff from September 15.

Alcohol, dairy targeted
Trump cited what he called “discriminatory” provincial boycotts of American alcohol as the reason for the new restrictions.
Canadian provinces have removed many US wines and spirits from their shops as part of a wider consumer boycott of American products that has grown since Trump’s tariff campaign began.
The latest measures come after Canada imposed fresh tariffs on US goods on Tuesday in retaliation for Washington’s duties announced last month.
The White House said the new steps were aimed at protecting American producers and discouraging further retaliation.
“President Trump is doing this to make sure, again, that we keep a level playing field, deter retaliation, and of course protect American production,” a senior US administration official told reporters.
Trump targets government contracts
Trump also moved to restrict Canadian products from major US government procurement contracts.
In a post on Truth Social, he directed the General Services Administration (GSA), working with the US Trade Representative, to remove Canadian-origin products from its Multiple Award Schedules unless Canada provides what he called “full and fair reciprocity” for American companies and farmers.
Trump said the programme accounts for more than $50 billion a year in government purchases.
He accused Canada of restricting American businesses from its government procurement market while allowing Canadian firms broad access to the US market.
“From now on, NO RECIPROCITY – NO ACCESS! I am hereby directing the GSA, working with the USTR, to take all necessary steps to REMOVE Canadian-origin products from GSA’s Multiple Award Schedules unless Canada restores full and fair reciprocity for American Farmers and Companies,” he wrote.
