Nalanda’s Dharmaganja was a vast ancient library complex housing diverse manuscripts. Its destruction remains one of the greatest intellectual losses in history.
More than a millennium before modern universities took shape, India nurtured one of the world’s greatest intellectual hubs, Nalanda Mahavihara in present-day Bihar. At the centre of this ancient learning ecosystem stood its famed library complex, Dharmaganja, often referred to as Dharma Gunj, meaning “Treasury of Knowledge.”
According to CSE IIT Kanpur’s archival compilation on ancient Indian libraries, Dharmaganja was not a single hall of scrolls but a vast, multi-building library complex designed to serve thousands of resident students and teachers. The complex housed three major library buildings Ratnasagara, Ratnodadhi, and Ratnaranjaka each dedicated to specific subjects and levels of scholarship.
Educational heritage notes from Young INTACH emphasise that Nalanda’s library was a comprehensive academic repository, not a monastic bookroom as often imagined. Manuscripts preserved here covered logic (Nyaya), grammar (Vykaraa), medicine (Ayurveda and Buddhist medicine), astronomy (Jyotisha), mathematics, literature, linguistics, and global Buddhist philosophy. The diversity of subjects is repeatedly highlighted in ancient travel records, especially those of the Chinese monk Xuanzang (Hiuen Tsang), who studied at Nalanda in the 7th century CE. His writings, translated by Victorian scholar Samuel Beal, describe “large storehouses of manuscripts” and rigorous scholarly activity centred around them.
Archaeological work by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) supports the scale of intellectual activity at Nalanda. Excavated structures reveal large monasteries, lecture halls, and storage rooms believed to be part of the library complex. While folklore often exaggerates the number of storeys or manuscripts, historical sources consistently agree that Dharmaganja was one of the largest ancient knowledge repositories in Asia.
The UNESCO World Heritage dossier notes that scholars from China, Korea, Tibet, Japan, and Southeast Asia flocked to Nalanda specifically for its library resources. Many carried back manuscripts copied at Dharmaganja, spreading Indian knowledge traditions across Asia.
