ABVP protests MCD over 6 deaths in Satya Niketan, demanding MCD Commissioner’s resignation, FIRs against officials, & safety audits for student accommodations.
Six deaths have turned the ABVP’s Satya Niketan protest into something bigger than just a campus agitation. It is a direct challenge to Delhi’s civic establishment, with the student organisation demanding accountability from the MCD’s top brass.
“The MCD Commissioner is not fit to hold such a critical position and should resign immediately. This is the same officer who was earlier shunted following the controversy over walking his dog at a stadium. His record raises serious questions about his administrative competence. Delhi cannot afford such leadership when lives are at stake,” Virendra Solanki, general secretary of ABVP, said, adding that his organisation would not rest until punitive measures are taken.
“Why was excavation work being carried out in the basement in the first place? Who authorised it? Was it being carried out in compliance with building and safety regulations? These questions demand immediate answers. We demand the immediate registration of an FIR against the concerned officials, the building owners and the zone heads. Those responsible for the negligence and regulatory lapses that contributed to this tragedy must be identified and held accountable without delay,” he said.
ABVP Takes Satya Niketan Anger To MCD
The anger was not confined to the rubble of a collapsed student accommodation. It travelled to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). Within hours of the Satya Niketan tragedy, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the RSS, mobilised and took its protest straight to the headquarters of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Sunday. Its demand was blunt — the MCD Commissioner must resign, officials responsible for civic lapses must face action, and student accommodations across Delhi must undergo a safety audit.
The protest escalated, with demonstrators entering the civic body premises and several protesters being detained after a confrontation with police.
That makes this more than a conventional student protest.
The ABVP, often viewed through the prism of its ideological proximity to the RSS and its political front, the BJP, is positioning itself here not as a defender of the establishment but as its accuser. Its target is not an opposition government. It is the civic machinery of Delhi itself — the inspectors, engineers, zone-level officials and the administrative hierarchy responsible for enforcing building norms.
And that is politically significant. This is also being seen as an outreach to the young generation, which appeared to have moved away from the organisation after the NEET protests at Jantar Mantar.
Questions Over Safety, Accountability Mount
The Satya Niketan building was being used as a boys’ PG and housed students in an area packed with such accommodation. Preliminary assessments have raised questions over unauthorised construction, including basement work, while reports indicate that the building did not have a sanctioned plan or fire NOC.
The most uncomfortable question, therefore, is not simply why the building collapsed, but how an allegedly unauthorised structure housing students was allowed to function in the first place.
The excavation and renovation work reported at the site make that question even more urgent. Who permitted the work? Who inspected it? Were structural safety norms followed? Were complaints received and ignored? And if the building was in violation, why was the enforcement machinery not activated before lives were lost?
The ABVP is now turning these questions into a political campaign for accountability.
