Violence marred Ram Navami processions in Murshidabad and Purulia as authorities deployed forces to restore law and order.

Tensions gripped Murshidabad district on Friday after an altercation between two communities during a Ram Navami procession escalated into violence. Both sides were involved in throwing of stones and vandalism.
Members of one community alleged that stones were thrown at their procession in Raghunathganj, while members of the other community claimed that provocative remarks were made during the rally.
Police sources said the situation was brought under control after local police and central forces were deployed in the area. Authorities have since been conducting route marches to maintain law and order in the district.
A police officer said strict action will be taken against those involved in the violence. Residents have also been urged to remain calm, with security tightened across the region.
A similar incident was reported on the same day in Purulia’s Para. According to local authorities, the situation there was also brought under control.
Purulia Superintendent of Police Vaibhav Tiwari said a group of people were travelling in a vehicle to participate in a Ram Navami rally, when it was vandalised by members of another community. The driver sustained injuries in the incident.
