A HEROIC 6-year-old boy made a desperate attempt to protect his young sister after they were viciously attacked by their mother who allegedly stabbed them 50 times.
Jan Marie Mull, 59, recalled the horrifying feeling that overcame her when she learned that her grandson, Dawson, and his 3-year-old sister, Hazel, were rushed to the hospital with multiple stab wounds.
Dawson and Hazel were stabbed 50 times combined after their mother Taylor Gosnell attacked them with a kitchen knife in their South Carolina home on September 26, according to police.
“I couldn’t breathe. Honest to God, I could not breathe. I was freaking floored,” Mull told The U.S. Sun.
The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office said little Dawson and Hazel suffered severe cuts down to the bone.
Deputies uncovered the bloody scene at Gosnell’s home, about 35 miles east of Greenville, after responding to a welfare check.
When authorities arrived, they found the home in disarray, including smashed television sets and shattered mirrors.
There, deputies located the siblings, alone and suffering from multiple cuts and stabs.
Mull said doctors have told her that Dawson is facing the likelihood of amputation.
“The medicine keeps him knocked out. They are looking at amputation,” the grandmother added.
Gosnell, 35, returned to the home while authorities were investigating the scene and began exhibiting strange behavior, including speaking rapidly and appearing distressed.
Officials transported Gosnell to a hospital for a mental health evaluation, but before she arrived she allegedly tried to flee from the ambulance and had to be restrained to a stretcher.
Gosnell was arrested and charged with two counts of attempted murder after being medically cleared.
Mull, whose son Blake, who died in 2020, is Dawson’s dad, believes her grandson suffered the worst of the attack because he was attempting to save his sister.
“The only thing I can visualize why Dawson had more injuries than Hazel was Dawson was trying to protect Hazel,” Mull said.
