Justice Ujjal Bhuyan of the Supreme Court expressed serious concerns regarding police action against protesting students at Jantar Mantar.

Supreme Court judge Justice Ujjal Bhuyan said on Friday that police personnel assaulting protesting students and demonstrators at the Jantar Mantar was “distressing” and “a matter of grave concern”. The country saw multiple clashes between protesters and security personnel, especially in the national capital, during the Cockroach Janta Party-led protest against alleged irregularities in the NEET examination.
“All of us are dismayed when we see young officers of the Indian Police Service personally going and assaulting protesters and demonstrators. This is something very, very distressing to observe,” he said.
“The detachment expected of police officers somehow seems to be disappearing, and this is indeed a matter of grave concern,” he added.
Justice Bhuyan made the remarks while speaking at a launch event of the book, “Policing the Republic”, written by former secretary (security) Yashovardhan Azad. The event was held at Viceroy Hall in the national capital.
Congress MP P Chidambaram, former Maharashtra DGP D Sivanandhan and others were also present at the event.
The remarks come just days after the Supreme Court of India invoked Article 142 to dismiss all FIRs against NEET-UG protesters, leading the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) to cancel its planned march on September 5.
The Supreme Court quashed all FIRs registered against protesters across Delhi, Bihar, West Bengal, Assam and Maharashtra in connection with the NEET protests.
