As the Goa-bound IndiGo flight from Delhi was to make an emergency landing in Mumbai on Wednesday, the pilot of the plane declared ‘PAN PAN PAN’, Hindustan Times reported, quoting officials.

The report also claimed the incident happened when the IndiGo flight was flying about 100 nautical miles north of Bhubaneswar.

“The pilot declared ‘PAN PAN PAN’ (an urgent message indicating a non-life-threatening emergency) due to a malfunction in engine number 1,” an official told HT.

The Goa-bound IndiGo flight from Delhi made an emergency landing in Mumbai on after it was diverted to the city due to a mid-air engine failure.

Later, the airline, in a statement, said a “technical snag” forced the aircraft to be diverted to Mumbai.

“Full emergency was declared for IndiGo flight 6E-6271, operating on Delhi-Goa route after it was diverted to Mumbai due to one engine failure,” news agency PTI quoted a source as saying.

“A technical snag was detected on flight 6E 6271 while flying from Delhi to Manohar International Airport, Goa on July 16. Following procedures, the aircraft was diverted and landed at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai,” the IndiGo spokesperson said.

The airline did not share the number of people on board or the nature of the snag.

“While the aircraft will undergo necessary checks and maintenance before resuming operations, an alternative aircraft has been arranged for completing the journey, which will depart shortly with the customers,” the spokesperson said.

In a separate statement, a spokesperson from the Mumbai airport said, “Following the diversion of a Delhi–Goa flight due to a technical snag, a full emergency was declared at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai (CSMIA) at 21:35 hours on 16 July 2025. The flight landed safely at 21:52 hours. The full emergency status was withdrawn at 21:57 hours.”

“Passengers were safely deboarded and assisted by terminal staff. While the airline coordinates alternative onward travel for the passengers, CSMIA’s Terminal Operations team remains on standby to provide all necessary support,” the spokesperson said.

“There has been no impact on overall airport operations. At CSMIA, safety always remains our highest priority,” they added.

On Tuesday, an IndiGo flight from Delhi had a harrowing experience when the aircraft took off immediately after touchdown at Patna’s Jayaprakash Narayan International Airport.

There were 173 passengers onboard the flight at the time of the incident.

The incident took place at 9 pm due to an unstable approach.
