National Conference, BJP set for rival protests in J&K on Wednesday

  • September 2, 2026

The rival protests come amid an intensifying political contest, with the NC seeking action from the Centre on restoration of statehood, constitutional safeguards and the reservation issue.

Srinagar: The National Conference (NC) will gherao BJP offices in Srinagar and Jammu on Wednesday (September 2) over statehood and other demands, while the Civil Secretariat will protest outside the Civil Secretariat in Srinagar over the Omar Abdullah government’s performance.

The rival protests come amid an intensifying political contest, with the NC seeking action from the Centre on restoration of statehood, constitutional safeguards and the reservation issue.

On the other hand, BJP has accused the NC government of failing to address electricity tariffs, unemployment, recruitment and delays in local-body elections.

The NC said its mobilisation was aimed at pressing the Union government to act on assurances concerning Jammu and Kashmir made before Parliament and the Supreme Court.

“The mandate of the people of Jammu & Kashmir is not a blank cheque. It must be respected, not taken for granted,” the party said.

The proposed protests follow the NC’s July 20 statehood mobilisation in Delhi, where police stopped party leaders from reaching Jantar Mantar.

The party subsequently held a demonstration in the vicinity of Constitution Club, with Omar Abdullah and Farooq Abdullah among those who participated.

Statehood remains the NC government’s principal demand from the Centre. It has also sought changes to the reservation structure and clearance of the related file.
