Men Resist Dieting Because It’s Too Feminine, Study Suggests

Masculine, Still Image-Conscious: Appearance Concerns Pushed Men To Diet More Than Health Scares

A man walks past a mirror, catches sight of himself without a shirt on, and mutters something unprintable under his breath. That moment, not a doctor’s warning or a health class lecture, is often what finally pushes men to try losing weight.

A study published in PLOS One looked at how a group of adult men thought and felt about dieting, and it pokes holes in a lot of assumptions built into typical weight-loss programs. Researchers held group conversations with men about their struggles with weight, and what came out wasn’t just complaints about willpower or busy schedules. It ran deeper: many men see dieting itself as fundamentally not for them, a “female” pursuit tied to restriction and appearance, even while privately caring a lot about how they look.

Men openly mocked the idea that appearance mattered to them, insisting women were the ones obsessed with body image, then described staring in mirrors with disgust, hating photos of themselves, or realizing their favorite suit no longer fit. Researchers noted that participants were “themselves engaging with the very preoccupation they had distanced themselves from the female domain.” At least among these men, talking openly about that concern seemed to sit awkwardly beside their view of dieting as feminine.

Men Called Dieting a ‘Female’ Pursuit in Focus Group Sessions

Getting men to talk openly about body image and dieting isn’t easy, so the research team used group conversations, reasoning that discussion among people with shared experiences tends to produce deeper, richer answers. Thirty men signed up, and 24 stuck it out across four sessions, some in person at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, England, others online. Participants averaged 46 years old, the group’s average BMI fell within the conventional overweight range, and all had experience with, or an interest in pursuing, weight loss.

Sessions ran about an hour and covered a set list of open-ended questions, with room to go off script when something struck a nerve. Researchers then combed the transcripts for patterns that kept showing up across groups.

Beyond that core tension, two practical threads ran through the discussions. Men pointed to real barriers like conflicting nutrition advice and exhausting work schedules that left little energy for cooking or meal planning, the kind of grind that makes any diet feel like one more chore layered on a busy life. And three kinds of support stood out as what actually helped men stick with changes: a “buddy” for mutual accountability, a “mentor” with more expertise, and a spouse who often took charge of meal planning and shopping entirely.

That last point deserves attention. Several men described handing over control of their diet to their wives, relying on them to plan meals and buy healthier snacks. One participant said his wife “structures our meal plan” and buys him apples instead of chocolate, adding that “half the battle” was already won because of her involvement. Another said flatly that without his wife’s support, “I wouldn’t have done it.”

Photos and Mirrors Motivated Men More Than Health Scares Did

Maybe the most surprising result was how little health risk factored into men’s decisions to change, compared to appearance. Even a participant who’d had emergency heart surgery said “the photo was the more, bigger prompt,” ranking a snapshot of himself as more motivating than a life-threatening medical event. Diabetes diagnoses and reading about heart attacks in people their own age did push some men toward action, but appearance dissatisfaction emerged as the dominant theme across every group.

Once men did commit to a diet, researchers found it often followed a discouraging cycle: intense short-term effort, some weight loss, then a slow drift back to old habits. One man compared the pattern to eating one doughnut, which became two, and “before you know where you are, you’re back at the other end of where you want to be.” This repeating pattern, showing up in nearly every group, reinforced the belief that dieting simply doesn’t work long-term, even as many participants kept trying new versions of it anyway.
