OpenAI has named former Uber India chief Prabhjeet Singh as Managing Director for India as it expands in a key Artificial Intelligence market.

OpenAI has appointed former Uber India executive Prabhjeet Singh as its Managing Director for India, underscoring the company’s growing focus on one of the world’s most important artificial intelligence (AI) markets. Singh, who previously led Uber’s operations in India and South Asia, is set to join OpenAI in September. With the appointment, he becomes the ChatGPT maker’s highest-ranking executive in the country and will spearhead efforts to strengthen the company’s presence across multiple segments.
He will report to Kiran Mani, Managing Director for Asia Pacific (APAC), and oversee consumer expansion, enterprise adoption, partnerships, regulatory engagement and business operations in India.
The leadership change comes as OpenAI ramps up investments in India, a country it considers central to its long-term growth ambitions.
Over the past year, the company has increased its engagement with enterprises, developers and policymakers while expanding local operations. OpenAI also established its first office in New Delhi in November 2025 as part of its broader strategy to build a stronger on-ground presence.
As Managing Director for India, Singh will focus on creating partnerships and supporting the country’s evolving AI ecosystem. His mandate also includes helping consumers, businesses, educational institutions and government agencies make greater use of artificial intelligence technologies.
From IIT And IIM To OpenAI Leadership
Singh’s academic background includes a degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, followed by an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, two institutions widely regarded among India’s top educational establishments.
Before entering the technology sector, he worked in finance as a senior analyst at Lehman Brothers in London. He later joined McKinsey & Company as a senior associate.
