“Made Decision To Leave”: Cristiano Ronaldo Exits Portugal Camp. Controversy Explained

  • October 1, 2026

Cristiano Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp reportedly after a dispute with coach Jorge Jesus and federation president Pedro Proenca. A retirement from international football could be on the cards in the coming days.

The Portugal national team has been thrown into turmoil after captain Cristiano Ronaldo left the training camp in Copenhagen following a tense disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus. Taking to social media, Ronaldo made his decision to leave the national team camp public, saying the decision was taken after he spoke to the President of the Portuguese Football Federation Pedro Proenca. Vowing to narrate the full extent of the controversy, Ronaldo pledged that he will reveal the truth in due time. However, media outlets in Europe have already started reporting inside details on the matter, explaining what transpired between Ronaldo, Portugal manager Jorge Jesus, and the federation’s president. The dramatic development has reignited fierce debate regarding the veteran forward’s role in the national setup and his relationship with the coaching staff.

Taking to social media, Ronaldo wrote: “After the National Team Coach’s press conference, and following a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, I made the decision to leave the National Team camp. In due time, I will tell the truth to all Portuguese people about the reasons that motivated my departure from the national team, to which I have always dedicated myself. Now is the time to wish good luck to Portugal and to all my teammates, without exception.”

What Started The Controversy?

As reported by Portuguese media, the trouble began during Portugal’s UEFA Nations League match against Norway. After playing against Wales a few days prior, Ronaldo was named on the substitutes’ bench. Although he spent time warming up during the second half, the flow of the match changed the manager’s plans.

Goncalo Ramos played well upfront, scoring the winning goal in a 2-1 victory, and head coach Jorge Jesus ultimately decided not to use Ronaldo at all, leaving him on the bench for the entire ninety minutes. Visibly frustrated by the lack of playing time, Ronaldo walked straight down the tunnel at the final whistle instead of joining his teammates to thank the supporters.

Explaining his selection criteria and his stance on team authority, Jorge Jesus addressed his policy regarding player status:

“His performance is what matters. The past doesn’t count. Cristiano is a player like any other. If he is performing well, he will play. If he isn’t, he won’t.”

As noted by multiple publications, although the Portuguese Football Federation and Jesus denied any physical issues, Ronaldo missed normal group training to complete gym work, which only fuelled media reports of a growing dispute between the captain and the coach. Addressing media speculation surrounding the gym session, Jesus clarified:

“He didn’t refuse [to train]. He’s going to train today. It’s the fourth day, so he’s going to train. And he didn’t refuse to train. It’s impossible. Do you believe that? Not Cris.”

The Sudden Departure

As media speculation and tension grew, Portuguese Football Federation President Pedro Proenca travelled to Scandinavia to hold an emergency face-to-face meeting with both Ronaldo and Jorge Jesus.

Addressing the media following the talks, Jorge Jesus played down rumours of a severe rift and maintained that team selection remained entirely under his control:

“They forced me to talk to Cris about an issue that wasn’t even an issue. Cris, there’s so much talk in Portugal that we have to talk, I don’t understand what’s going on. There was nothing to talk about.”

“The president came, obviously, he has to be here with the team. Given what was being said in Portugal, he wanted to know what had happened. But after dinner, we’d already resolved the problem, which wasn’t a problem at all.”

However, Jorge Jesus firmly reiterated his authority regarding starting line-ups and tactical substitutions ahead of the upcoming match against Denmark:

“I can promise whatever I want. I am the coach. I told the player that he was not going to play. I will put you on the bench. If I need you for 30 minutes, you will play; if not, you will not.”

“I told Cris that he wasn’t going to play these two games. During the game I thought maybe I would need him and he would warm up. Then I didn’t put him in… Any player, when we’re out there warming up for 20 or 30 minutes and then don’t get in the game, no one is happy about it. Especially Cris. Even if it were Pelé or Maradona.”
