A 23-year-old woman in Pune’s Shirur delivered her baby on a roadside after reportedly being turned away from a hospital, with locals and a nearby doctor stepping in during the emergency.
What should have been a routine hospital delivery turned into an emergency on a public road in Pune, where a young pregnant woman gave birth in the most unexpected circumstances, surrounded not by hospital staff, but by strangers who stepped up when it mattered most.
The incident took place on Saturday in Shirur, involving 23-year-old Supriya Nitesh Kale. She had reportedly been advised by Shirur Rural Hospital to seek delivery services elsewhere, as the facility was no longer admitting patients for childbirth. The couple was directed to travel to Ahalyanagar or Pune for treatment.
However, before they could reach any alternate facility, Kale began experiencing intense labour pain near Nirman Chowk while en route. Witnesses said her condition rapidly worsened, and she collapsed on the roadside at around 10:15 am, triggering panic among bystanders.
As the urgency of the situation became clear, locals wasted no time in seeking medical help. They reached out to Dr Sunita Pote, a nearby gynaecologist whose clinic was located less than 500 metres away. Responding swiftly, Dr Pote arrived at the scene and took charge of the situation.
In an extraordinary display of community support, residents, particularly women, came together to create a makeshift enclosure using sarees, gowns, and bedsheets, ensuring Kale’s privacy as the delivery was carried out in the open.
Despite the challenging conditions, the delivery was successfully completed, and both mother and newborn were reported to be safe. A video capturing the moment, where Dr Pote is seen presenting the newborn to the relieved crowd, has since gone viral on Instagram, shared by the handle @advyashomatiinc.
