Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in New York on Monday evening, local time, to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency reported.
Araghchi travelled to the United States at the head of a high-ranking Iranian delegation as Tehran prepares for a series of diplomatic engagements during the annual UN gathering.
The Iranian foreign minister was welcomed at John F. Kennedy International Airport by Gholamhossein Darzi, Iran’s permanent representative and chargé d’affaires to the United Nations.
Araghchi Holds Consultations In Doha
Before arriving in New York, Araghchi made a brief stop in Doha, where he held consultations with Qatari officials over the latest regional developments.
IRNA did not provide further details about the issues discussed during the talks. Qatar has remained an important diplomatic interlocutor in discussions involving regional developments and Iran.
Araghchi’s visit to New York comes ahead of a series of high-level meetings linked to the UN General Assembly, where world leaders and senior government officials are expected to discuss major international and regional issues.
Pezeshkian To Travel To New York
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is also scheduled to travel to New York on Tuesday to attend the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
According to IRNA, Pezeshkian is expected to address the General Assembly during the high-level session. He is also scheduled to meet and hold consultations with a number of world leaders and senior officials on the sidelines of the gathering.
The annual UN General Assembly provides member states with an opportunity to present their positions on international issues and hold bilateral and multilateral discussions.
Araghchi’s arrival marks the start of Iran’s diplomatic participation in this year’s high-level UN meetings. His presence in New York is expected to precede Pezeshkian’s arrival and address.
The Iranian delegation’s participation comes as regional developments remain a major focus of international diplomacy. However, IRNA’s report did not provide details of Araghchi’s planned meetings in New York or specify the issues he is expected to raise during the General Assembly.
