India Braces For Wet Week: IMD Predicts Heavy Showers, Issues Weather Alert For Several States

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast predicting a wet week for various regions across India, featuring widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds until Saturday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a wet week for India with widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds until Saturday.
While no significant change in maximum temperatures across the country has been predicted by the IMD, they might fall gradually by 2-3 degrees Celsius over the next 3 days, especially in northeastern states such as Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim, which are expected to receive consistent rainfall throughout the week.
The wet weather conditions may also be accompanied by thundersquall and hailstorm in some parts of the country. Southern India is also in for an intense wet spell.

Heavy To Very Heavy Rainfall Across Several Regions In India: IMD

According to the IMD release, heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, is likely to occur in Northeast India, SubHimalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim over the next 5-6 days. The region is also expected to experience fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall with gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-50 kmph during the same period.
Assam and Meghalaya, in particular, are likely to face heavy to very heavy rain, along with thunder and gusty winds of up to 50 km/h. Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura are also set to see significant showers.

IMD Predicts Heavy Showers For South: Karnataka, Kerala On Alert

The west coast–including Karnataka, Konkan, Goa, and Kerala– and adjoining parts of Peninsular India are expected to witness intense showers from May 18 to May 24, 2025. Isolated heavy rainfall is predicted over various states, including Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal from May 18-20; Kerala, Mahe, Coastal Karnataka, and North Interior Karnataka from May 18-24; Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam from May 20-22; Rayalaseema from May 18-20; and South Interior Karnataka from May 18-21.
In addition, areas including Coastal Karnataka from May 20-22, South Interior Karnataka from May 18-20, and North Interior Karnataka from May 19-22 are expected to receive very heavy rainfall. Extremely heavy rainfall is likely in Coastal Karnataka on May 20.

IMD Warning For North Belt: Delhi To Face Light Rain

Isolated hailstorms are likely over Himachal Pradesh on May 19 and Uttarakhand on May 19-20. Other areas, including Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, will also see isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, especially from May 18-20.
