Techie claims Deloitte revoked his offer after he quit his job, allegedly over a failed background check, leaving him jobless and confused
A software engineer’s claim has triggered a wave of reactions online after alleging that Deloitte revoked his job offer just days after he resigned from his previous company. The incident has struck a chord with many professionals, with several social media users describing the experience as “worse than a breakup.”
According to software engineer Rajeev Anjana, he had successfully completed multiple interview rounds and received an official offer letter from Deloitte. However, shortly after resigning from his existing role and completing his notice period, he allegedly received an email informing him that the company would no longer proceed with his hiring.
Sharing screenshots and details of the incident on social media, Anjana said the sudden reversal left him devastated. He claimed the email came from Deloitte’s Background Investigation Team and stated that a discrepancy review had been completed, following which the company decided to rescind the offer.
“It really hurts when you try your best, crack the Big 4, and finally get the offer, and then one fine morning, you see this,” he wrote in his post.
He further revealed that he had already left his previous job by the time he received the message. “I have already resigned from my company, and my notice period has ended. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry,” he said.
In a follow-up post, Anjana said he tried reaching out to the HR representative at Deloitte to understand what had gone wrong during the background verification process. However, he claimed he was informed that the details were confidential and could not be shared.
“I don’t understand what’s confidential about it. I cleared the interview, I passed the rounds… If I was informed what the problem is, I could have helped resolve it,” he wrote.
He also alleged that the HR representative asked him not to contact them again and informed him that he had effectively been blacklisted from future opportunities at the firm.
The incident triggered strong reactions online, with many social media users expressing sympathy and sharing similar stories from their own careers. One user said they knew several people who had cleared interviews at Deloitte but never received joining letters, though many later landed jobs at firms like Microsoft and other Big 4 and Big 3 companies.
Several others pointed out that job offers are rarely revoked during background checks unless there is a serious issue with documentation.
“Usually, companies do not revoke offers during background check unless there’s something like really wrong with the documents. Sorry you had to go through this, though,” one Instagram user said.
Another person noted that candidates are generally informed about discrepancies and given a chance to explain them before an offer is withdrawn. They suggested that if no such opportunity was provided, it could indicate “non-compliance” by the background verification agency.
Other comments reflected both concern and criticism. “I’m getting anxious… I’ve resigned and accepted a new offer from Deloitte USI, the background verification process is ongoing. Sending positive vibes! Hang in there, brother, and keep applying – your dream job is just around the corner!” one user wrote.
