H1N1 Cases Cross 3,000 In Delhi: How To Protect Yourself From Swine Flu At Home

  • September 1, 2026

Delhi’s H1N1 tally has crossed 3,000 as flu cases rise across several states. Here are simple, practical ways to protect yourself from swine flu.

Delhi’s H1N1 tally has crossed the 3,000 mark, with 3,006 cases reported so far this season, according to the latest figures. The capital recorded 199 new H1N1 cases in a single day, making it the second-highest single-day increase reported this season. Alongside H1N1, Delhi has recorded 3,843 Influenza A cases in total, highlighting the scale of the respiratory illness circulating in the city.

H1N1 Cases In India

Delhi is not alone in seeing a rise in flu infections. Uttar Pradesh has reported 551 laboratory-confirmed H1N1 cases across 57 districts, with Gautam Buddh Nagar recording 189 cases, followed by Lucknow with 113, Meerut with 54 and Ghaziabad with 32. These four districts account for nearly 70% of the state’s reported H1N1 cases. In Maharashtra, 1,109 H1N1 cases had been reported by August 21, already exceeding the 942 cases recorded throughout 2025. Rajasthan has reported 146 H1N1 cases between January and August, including 55 cases in August alone. Chandigarh has recorded 14 cases this year, while 12 cases have been reported in Gurugram. Karnataka is also seeing substantial influenza activity. The state had recorded 4,428 laboratory-confirmed influenza cases by August 24, although this figure covers influenza rather than H1N1 alone.

With cases climbing in several parts of the country, the focus naturally turns to what people can do outside hospitals and clinics to reduce their risk. The good news is that some of the most useful precautions are simple everyday habits.

Keep Your Hands Clean

Hand hygiene remains one of the easiest ways to reduce the spread of respiratory infections. Wash your hands regularly with soap and water, particularly after returning home, coughing or sneezing, and before eating. If soap and water are unavailable, an alcohol-based hand sanitiser can be used. Try not to touch your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands.

Be Careful Around Crowded Spaces

H1N1 spreads mainly through respiratory particles released when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks. During periods of increased flu activity, limiting unnecessary time in crowded or poorly ventilated spaces can lower exposure. Opening windows and improving indoor airflow can also help.

Wear A Mask When It Makes Sense

A mask can offer an additional layer of protection, particularly in crowded indoor settings or when you are around someone with flu-like symptoms. It is especially important for someone who is already sick to wear a mask when they must be around other people, helping reduce the chance of passing the infection on.

Do Not Ignore Flu-Like Symptoms

Fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, fatigue and a runny or blocked nose can occur with influenza. If symptoms develop, staying home and limiting close contact with others can help prevent further transmission. People at higher risk of complications, including older adults, pregnant women, young children and those with certain underlying conditions, should contact a doctor promptly if they develop flu symptoms.
