A STAGGERING 1,600 baby teeth have been found in a mass grave at a ranch after smoke was spotted from a secret incinerator.
The grisly haul was reportedly unearthed alongside charred bone fragments in Zacapu, in Mexico’s cartel-plagued state of Michoacán.
Activists claim the tiny teeth could represent more than 80 children – feared to be victims of sexual exploitation, organ trafficking or child pornography.
But the chilling discovery has not yet been independently confirmed by forensic testing.
Authorities are still carrying out scientific examinations to establish whether the recovered material is human, how many victims it could represent and how they died.
The horror began with a plume of smoke rising above the mountains surrounding Zacapu in 2021.
Margarita López, founder of volunteer search group Buscando Cuerpos en Todo México, said she spotted the mysterious column while searching for missing people.
Her group followed the smoke towards a private ranch which López claims belonged to a drug trafficker from Sinaloa.
Beneath avocado trees, the searchers stumbled across a makeshift crematorium.
López claims scorching temperatures still lingered at the site following what appeared to have been the recent incineration of remains.
Members of the group began painstakingly scouring the charred ground – unearthing fragments of human-looking bone including vertebrae, phalanges, kneecaps and tarsal bones.
López said an investigator from Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office was accompanying the searchers.
But officials said on Thursday it had no record of receiving a complaint or request for forensic intervention over the alleged discovery.
The official López claims was at the search, identified only as “Braulio”, allegedly cleaned one of the teeth recovered from the site.
He determined it appeared to be the canine tooth of a child, according to López.
Searchers switched to ultra-fine sieves with mesh measuring just a quarter of a centimetre as they hunted for more tiny fragments.
They spent days meticulously sieving the scorched soil and more tiny teeth began emerging from the earth.
López claims around 1,600 suspected children’s teeth were eventually recovered during searches stretching from the first operations in 2021 through to work carried out on September 22, 2026.
She has claimed the teeth indicate children aged between one and six were burned at the site.
Elsewhere, she has suggested the suspected remains could belong to children aged up to 12.
Neither age range has been independently established by forensic experts.
Nor has it been confirmed that the teeth represent 1,600 separate children.
There is currently no publicly established forensic evidence linking the suspected remains to any of those crimes.
López said: “Most likely, these children were victims of sexual exploitation, organ trafficking, or child pornography . I ask those who stigmatize the disappeared, what crime did these more than 80 children commit?”
The activist and other parents from her group have spent the past two weeks rallying outside Mexico‘s Attorney General’s Office in Mexico City.
She claims the evidence recovered by her group has already been handed to Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office, known as the FGR, for forensic examinations and DNA analysis.
Senator Laura Esquivel Torres has demanded answers from law enforcement authorities in Michoacán over the horrifying claims.
