During a gathering in poll-bound Assam, Prime Minister Narendra Modi says it was expected that the Congress would play the role of a responsible political party, but it failed yet again to prioritise national interest
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday (March 14, 2026) said the Congress was capitalising on the war in West Asia to create panic in India.
Addressing a gathering after inaugurating and initiating various development projects in poll-bound Assam’s Silchar, he said the Centre was working hard to minimise the impact of the war on the citizens of the country.
Silchar is the epicentre of Barak Valley, where the journey of the Bharatiya Janata Party to become a major political force in the Northeast began in the 1990s.
“We expected Congress to play the role of a responsible political party, but it failed yet again to prioritise national interest. Congress is trying hard to ensure people in the country panic and get trapped in a difficult situation, so that it can go after Modi,” the Prime Minister said.
“Congress has no vision for the country and every citizen in Assam should be wary of the party,” he added.

Mr. Modi said every State in the country has been teaching Congress a lesson after it got ejected from Assam. “Congress is losing one election after another,” he said.
Mr. Modi, who initiated and inaugurated a slew of Assam-specific projects from Guwahati on Friday (March 13, 2026), laid the foundation stone for the ₹24,000-crore Shillong-Silchar High-Speed Corridor. He said the access-controlled corridor, the first of its kind in the Northeast, would help the region gain faster access to the vast markets of Southeast Asia.
“Barak Valley was the hub of trade and culture until Congress partitioned the country in such a way that it cut off the region’s access to the sea. Congress has deliberately kept the region backward, while BJP has been trying to make it grow,” he said, alluding to the foundation stone he laid for an agricultural university at Patharkandi in Barak Valley’s Sribhumi district.
Mr. Modi further said that the BJP believed in prioritising the needs of those who have been left behind in the race for development. “Border villages were once considered the last villages, but our government views them as the first villages of the nation,” he said.
The Prime Minister noted that the Vibrant Village Programme, expanded from Cachar district, changed lives in border habitations significantly. He said that the historical neglect of these areas was now being replaced by proactive development and strategic focus.
