France Student Protests: Students complained about overcrowded classrooms, buildings in poor condition, staff shortages and teacher absences.

France Student Protests: France is facing one of its biggest waves of student unrest in months, with thousands of school students taking to the streets, hundreds of schools blocked or shut and hundreds of protesters detained as demonstrations over the state of the country’s education system spread across the country.
What began as school blockades escalated in some cities into clashes with police, fires and allegations of excessive force. The protests caught the French government off guard, with authorities acknowledging students’ concerns while condemning violence and disruption.
Why Are Students Protesting In France?
At the heart of the demonstrations is anger over what students and teachers describe as years of underinvestment in France’s public education system. Students complained about overcrowded classrooms, buildings in poor condition, staff shortages and teacher absences. Some schools have reportedly faced problems including leaks, damaged ceilings and other maintenance issues.
Students are also protesting against what they see as inadequate teacher pay and an unequal education system in which a student’s social background can influence their chances of success. Other grievances include France’s university admissions system, which students say is difficult and opaque, as well as concerns over increasingly difficult conditions for studying during periods of extreme heat.
How Big Have Student Protests Become In France?
The movement has spread well beyond individual schools. Hundreds of high schools across France were reported to have been closed or barricaded on Friday, while hundreds of young people were arrested as demonstrations continued.
In Paris, students blocked entrances to schools including Lycée Voltaire, with police deployed around some of the barricades. Demonstrations were also reported in cities including Lyon, Strasbourg and Montpellier. While many school protests have remained peaceful, clashes have broken out in some locations.
Fires, Tear Gas And Clashes With Police
The protests have increasingly been marked by scenes of violence in some areas. Fire damaged the entrances of two schools in Paris on Friday, while burning bins and fireworks were reported during demonstrations elsewhere.
Police used tear gas to disperse protesters in some cities. Students and their supporters have accused officers of using excessive force, while the government has condemned what it described as “urban violence”.
