Doraemon Director Tsutomu Shibayama Dies At 84 After Prolonged Lung Cancer Battle, Leaves Behind Iconic Legacy

Legendary Japanese anime director Tsutomu Shibayama, best known for his work on Doraemon, has passed away at the age of 84 after a prolonged battle with lung cancer. According to official statements, he died on March 6, 2026, in Tokyo, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in the world of animation.

Shibayama was widely regarded as one of the key figures who helped shape Japanese anime, especially for younger audiences. Over the course of his career, he directed numerous episodes of the Doraemon television series from 1984 to 2005 and helmed several feature films between 1983 and 2004. His storytelling played a crucial role in turning Doraemon into a global cultural phenomenon loved by generations.

Born on March 9, 1941, in Tokyo’s Asakusa district, Shibayama began his journey as a manga artist under the pen name Hajime Sanjō before transitioning into animation. His career spanned decades, during which he contributed to several iconic projects beyond Doraemon, including popular titles like Ranma ½, Nintama Rantaro, and Chibi Maruko-chan.

In addition to his creative achievements, Shibayama was also a co-founder of the animation studio Ajia-do Animation Works, which played a significant role in the development of modern anime. His versatility and dedication to storytelling earned him widespread respect within the industry.
