‘Cyclone Alert’ In Arabian Sea: IMD Warns Of Strong Winds, High Waves; Asks Fishermen To Suspend Fishing From May 21-24

  • May 21, 2025
‘Cyclone Alert’ In Arabian Sea | X

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert regarding possible rough weather conditions in the Arabian Sea near the coasts of Maharashtra and Goa from May 21 to May 24. A low-pressure area is expected to develop over the sea starting from Wednesday (May 21), which could gradually intensify and move northwards by Saturday (May 24). The information was shared by Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), Maharashtra on their official social media account.

No Direct Threat, But the Sea May Be Rough

Although there is no direct threat to the coastal regions of Maharashtra, the IMD has stated that the sea is likely to remain disturbed and rough due to the weather system. The effects of this development will be felt particularly between May 22 and May 24, during which the sea near coastal areas like Raigad, Ratnagiri, Mumbai and Palghar could become turbulent.

In addition, strong winds are expected in deep sea areas, which could pose a serious risk to small fishing boats and vessels.

Fishermen Adviced to Be Cautious

The Disaster Management Department has issued a set of safety instructions for fishermen and coastal communities. The department has strongly advised against venturing into the deep sea during this period.

They have asked fishermen to stay informed about weather updates and to strictly follow the guidance issued by the authorities and fishermen’s cooperative societies.

Precautions to Be Taken by Fishermen (May 21 to 24):

1. Stay updated with official weather forecasts from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

2. Follow all instructions issued by the local administration and fishermen’s cooperative societies.

3. Avoid going into the deep sea for fishing activities completely during this time.

4. Do not use small boats which are more likely to be affected by rough waves. Stay near the coastline if fishing is absolutely necessary.

5. Carry safety equipment such as life jackets, wireless communication devices and emergency supplies.

6. Move all fishing boats and vessels to safe areas, away from the shore, to protect them from strong winds and high tides.

7. Avoid all fishing activities when the sea is rough, to ensure the safety of yourself, your crew and others.
