A NEW YORK TIMES tech executive was shot dead in broad daylight after two masked attackers allegedly took turns firing at him in a packed parking lot.
Witnesses said the gunfire erupted as families were nearby, before the suspected shooters calmly walked away from the scene.
The horror unfolded at Dublin Sports Grounds in Dublin, California, shortly after 3 pm on Saturday.
Jonathan McKinsey, 40, was found lying in the parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Authorities arrested his two 77-year-old parents-in-law nearby within minutes.
Dublin Police identified them as Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, a married couple who also live in the city.
Both were arrested on suspicion of murder and booked into Santa Rita Jail.
Police have not revealed a motive and said detectives are still working to establish what led to the killing.
A witness told KPIX that a man opened fire on McKinsey before handing the gun to a woman, who also shot him.
The witness also said both attackers were wearing masks, though police have not publicly confirmed that account or said which suspect allegedly fired a weapon.
Another witness, Assad Razawi, said he heard several gunshots while nearby and then saw McKinsey collapse.
“I saw the guy drop to the floor: head bloody and chest bloody,” Razawi told KGO.
Other witnesses then directed officers toward the suspects as they walked away, according to local reports.
Police said both suspects remained nearby and were detained with help from members of the public.
The shooting stunned residents because the sports complex was busy with families at the time.
“This place is busy on a Saturday,” Dublin resident Kevin Stein told KTVU.
“It’s incredible that they’d just do that right in front of everybody.”
McKinsey worked as director of engineering for New York Times Games and had been with the company for more than three years, a Times spokesperson confirmed to the San Francisco Chronicle.
He joined the newspaper’s games engineering operation in 2023 after previously working in engineering roles at companies including Splunk.
Public records show McKinsey and his wife had also been locked in a series of legal disputes before his death.
His wife sought a domestic violence restraining order against him in October 2025, while McKinsey sought one against her two months later, according to Alameda County court records reviewed by SFGATE.
