China’s patrolling deviations can disrupt LAC peace: Govt after ITBP chief’s remark

  • October 24, 2026

India said deviations by Chinese forces from established patrolling patterns could disturb the situation along the Line of Actual Control, stressing that border peace is essential for bilateral ties. The statement came a day after ITBP chief Shatrujeet Kapur flagged continued confrontations with Chinese troops at several sites along the Arunachal Pradesh border.

India said on Friday that the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) could be disturbed when Chinese forces deviate from established patrolling patterns. It stressed that peace and tranquillity in border areas are essential for the overall development of India-China relations.

The statement came after Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Director General Shatrujeet Kapur said confrontations with Chinese troops continue at several sites along the border in Arunachal Pradesh.

“As we have noted in the past, the situation in the India-China border areas gets disturbed from time to time when Chinese forces diverge from established patrolling patterns,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at his bi-weekly media briefing.

“Both sides will continue to use existing diplomatic and military mechanisms to resolve outstanding issues and avoid misunderstanding and miscalculation along the Line of Actual Control,” he said.

Jaiswal said the two countries had also agreed to discuss ways to improve their understanding of the LAC in appropriate areas for better border management.

“I would also like to emphasise that the maintenance of peace and tranquillity in the border areas is essential for the overall development of bilateral relations,” he added.

Speaking in Alwar, Rajasthan, on Thursday, Kapur said the ITBP had raised drone platoons in all its border units and prepared a new “Strike” course to better handle battles similar to the Galwan Valley clash.

India and China have introduced a series of measures over the past year to rebuild ties, which came under severe strain after the deadly Galwan Valley clashes in 2020 and the military face-off that continued for more than four years.

In October 2024, the two sides finalised an agreement to disengage troops from Depsang and Demchok, the last two friction points in eastern Ladakh. Days later, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks in Kazan and took several decisions to improve bilateral ties.

In August last year, Modi travelled to Tianjin in China to attend the annual Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit. During extensive talks with Xi on the sidelines of the summit, Modi said India was committed to taking forward its relationship with China based on mutual trust, respect and sensitivity.
