Veteran playback singer Alka Yagnik was conferred the prestigious Padma Bhushan by Droupadi Murmu during the investiture ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. While fans celebrated the recognition of one of India’s most beloved voices, many also expressed concern after seeing the singer’s appearance in videos from the event.

While receiving her award, the 60-year-old singer was escorted by a staff member as she looked frail. While social media was flooded with congratulatory messages, there were also heartfelt wishes for Alka’s recovery from Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SNHL), a rare hearing disorder she revealed she was battling in 2024.

Yagnik’s diagnosis brought attention to a condition that affects millions worldwide and highlighted the importance of hearing health awareness.

What is sensorineural hearing loss?

Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SNHL) occurs when there is damage to the inner ear (cochlea) or the auditory nerve pathways that transmit sound signals to the brain.

Unlike temporary hearing problems caused by earwax buildup or infections, SNHL is often permanent and can significantly impact a person’s ability to hear and communicate. According to Yagnik, her hearing loss was triggered by a sudden viral attack, resulting in an unexpected and severe decline in hearing ability.

Symptoms of sensorineural hearing loss

The symptoms of SNHL can vary depending on the severity of damage, but commonly include:

  • Sudden or gradual hearing loss
  • Difficulty understanding conversations
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Muffled sounds
  • Trouble hearing in noisy environments
  • Feeling that people are speaking unclearly

In some cases, hearing loss can occur suddenly and may require immediate medical attention.

What causes SNHL?

Several factors can contribute to sensorineural hearing loss, including:

Viral infections

Certain viral infections can damage the inner ear structures responsible for hearing.

Exposure to loud noise

Long-term exposure to loud music, concerts, headphones, or occupational noise can permanently damage sensitive hair cells inside the cochlea.

Ageing

Age-related hearing loss is one of the most common forms of SNHL.

Medications

Certain drugs, known as ototoxic medications, may damage hearing when used over prolonged periods.

Medical conditions

Autoimmune disorders, head injuries, tumours, and circulatory problems can also affect hearing.

Why hearing health matters?

Hearing loss affects more than just the ears. Research shows that untreated hearing problems can impact mental health, social engagement, communication, and overall quality of life. Those with hearing loss may experience social isolation, anxiety and depression, reduced workplace productivity, communication difficulties, and cognitive decline in some cases.

Early diagnosis can help improve outcomes and provide access to hearing rehabilitation options.

Can sensorineural hearing loss be treated?

Treatment depends on the cause and severity of hearing loss. Possible management options include:

  • Hearing aids
  • Cochlear implants
  • Assistive listening devices
  • Auditory rehabilitation
  • Treatment of underlying medical conditions

In cases of sudden hearing loss, prompt medical evaluation is crucial because early intervention may improve recovery chances.
