In a revelation that could make even sci-fi screenwriters jealous, Albania’s Prime Minister Edi Rama has announced that his country’s first AI minister, Diella, is “pregnant” — expecting not babies, but 83 digital offspring to serve lawmakers.
In a speech at the Berlin Global Dialogue (BGD), Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama stunned the audience with a tongue-in-cheek revelation: the country’s artificial intelligence minister, Diella, is “pregnant” — and not with data, but with “83 children.”
“We took quite a risk today with Diella here and we did very well,” Rama said. “So for the first time, Diella is pregnant and with 83 children.”
According to Rama, these “children” are not your average newborns but AI assistants programmed to support Albania’s 83 Socialist Party MPs. Each will act as a digital aide, recording parliamentary sessions, summarising debates, and alerting lawmakers to key discussions they miss.
“Each one will serve as an assistant for those who will participate in parliamentary sessions,” Rama explained. “These children will know their mother.”
Rama said the system — expected to be fully functional by the end of 2026 — represents the next phase in Albania’s digital governance revolution.
FROM VIRTUAL BIRTH TO BUREAUCRATIC BRILLIANCE
Diella, whose name means Sun in Albanian, was officially appointed in May 2025 as the world’s first AI-generated cabinet minister. Her mission: To eradicate corruption in Albania’s notoriously murky public procurement system.
Initially launched as a virtual assistant on the e-Albania portal, Diella now oversees tenders and contracts, using data-driven logic to ensure fairness and transparency.
“She is the servant of public procurement,” Rama declared earlier. “We want to make tenders 100 percent incorruptible and every public fund 100 percent legible.”
The AI minister, represented visually as a woman in traditional Albanian dress, has become a symbol of the government’s attempt to merge technology with accountability.
