A stitch too late: Ahmedabad tailor fined Rs 11,500 for blouse delivery delay

  • October 29, 2025

A simple tailoring order in Ahmedabad escalated into a legal battle after the tailor failed to deliver a blouse on time and as promised. The consumer court ruled in favour of the customer, awarding compensation and refund, highlighting consumer rights awareness in India.

In Ahmedabad, what began as a simple tailoring order turned into a months-long legal battle that reached the district consumer dispute redressal commission.

A tailor has been ordered to pay nearly Rs 11,500, including compensation and legal costs, after failing to deliver a blouse on time for a customer’s family wedding.

The complainant, Poonamben Pariya, a resident of Ankur area, had approached Soni, The Designer Shop on CG Road in November 2024 to have a designer blouse stitched. The blouse was meant to be worn at a close relative’s wedding scheduled for December 24, 2024. Poonamben paid an advance of Rs 4,395, expecting the blouse to be ready a week before the ceremony.

When Poonamben visited the shop to collect her blouse, she found it was neither ready on time nor made according to the agreed design. The finished piece reportedly had visible stains and design flaws, leaving her shocked and frustrated.

Despite the tailor’s assurance that the issues would be fixed, he failed to deliver the blouse even after being given extra time.

Left with no choice, Poonamben had to wear a different outfit and matching jewellery to the wedding. “The excitement of attending a family function vanished completely,” she said, recalling how a moment meant for joy turned sour due to the tailor’s negligence.

FROM BOUTIQUE TO THE COURTROOM

After the wedding, Poonamben demanded a refund of the advance payment. The tailor refused, allegedly telling her that she could take the blouse but would not get her money back.

Feeling wronged, she decided to file a complaint with the Ahmedabad District Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission in June 2025.

Despite being called for hearings, the tailor initially failed to appear before the commission. Following the hearings and examination of the case, the commission found the tailor guilty of deficiency in service and ruled in Poonamben’s favour.

THE VERDICT: COMPENSATION FOR MENTAL DISTRESS

The commission ordered the tailor to refund the Rs 4,395 advance with 7% annual interest within 45 days, payable by cheque. In addition, the tailor was directed to pay Rs 5,000 as compensation for the mental harassment caused and Rs 2,000 towards legal expenses, bringing the total to around Rs 11,500.
