23 Opposition Parties, Kapil Sibal Write To CJI Over EC’s SIR; Jairam Ramesh Says ‘Committed To SURE’

Twenty-three Opposition parties along with one Independent MP have jointly written to Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant over the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process and other election-related issues, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said on Tuesday.

The move marks a show of unity within the INDIA bloc, with parties including the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) joining the joint representation.

Announcing the development in a post on X, Jairam Ramesh said the decision to write to the Chief Justice was first taken during the INDIA Janbandhan meeting held on June 8.

“21 political parties plus one Independent attended the INDIA Janbandhan meeting on June 8, 2026, where a decision was taken to address a joint letter to the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India on the SIR process of the Election Commission of India and other election-related issues,” Ramesh posted.

He further said, “Accordingly, a joint letter now signed by 23 political parties plus one Independent has been sent to the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India today. The Opposition parties are firmly anchored in SURE, Solidarity, Unity and REsistance.”

According to ANI, the INDIA bloc managed to secure the signatures of both the Aam Aadmi Party and the DMK after extensive discussions behind the scenes.

The two parties had not attended the INDIA Janbandhan meeting on June 8, but later joined the collective initiative by signing the letter addressed to the Chief Justice.

Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien also confirmed the development on X, saying that both the Aam Aadmi Party and the DMK had signed the joint letter sent to the Chief Justice.

PTI reported that the joint letter has been signed by 23 political parties along with Independent MP Kapil Sibal.

Besides raising concerns over the Special Intensive Revision process, the letter also addresses the role of the Election Commission and other election-related issues, sources told the news agency.

The Congress and several Opposition parties have been questioning the Election Commission over the SIR exercise for some time.

The June 8 INDIA Janbandhan meeting had focused on a range of political issues.
