A 13-year-old schoolgirl was rescued from an RO water plant in Uttar Pradesh’s Chandauli district after she was allegedly kidnapped, police said on Thursday. Two men have been arrested in the case and sent to jail.

Police said the Class 9 student went missing on Wednesday after returning from school and going to a nearby grocery store. When she did not return for a long time, her family began searching for her.

During the search, the family heard cries coming from inside an RO water plant located between the school and the store. They immediately informed the police, following which a team reached the spot, broke open the lock of the plant and rescued the girl.

“The minor girl was found with her hands and feet tied inside the plant,” police said. After the rescue, the girl’s family submitted a written complaint alleging that the plant’s operator, Zubair Alam, and another man, Ikram, had held her hostage.

Shahabganj Station House Officer Arun Kumar Singh said preliminary questioning of the two men suggested that the matter was linked to a dispute over a debt of Rs 15,000. A case has been registered against both accused under Sections 137(2) (kidnapping), 127(2) (wrongful confinement) and 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, he said.
