In what sounds like a plot straight out of a heist comedy, Swiss food giant Nestlé has reported the robbery of a massive shipment of its iconic KitKat bars and the internet can’t stop talking about it.

A truck carrying 12 tonnes (413,793 bars) of the popular chocolate went missing while travelling from Italy to Poland, according to the Associated Press. The consignment, which consisted of the signature wafer-filled chocolates coated in milk chocolate, was meant for distribution across European markets but vanished mid-transit last week.

KitKat also released a public statement on the same, writing, ”Official Statement – We can confirm that 12T of KitKat products were stolen while in transit between our factory in Central Italy and their destination in Poland. We are working closely with local authorities and supply chain partners to investigate. The good news: There are no concerns for consumer safety, and supply is not affected. Thank you.”

While the incident itself is unusual, it has quickly snowballed into a viral talking point online, with users reacting in disbelief and humour. One user wrote, ”What the f**k is going on in Europe? Who steals 12 TONS of KitKats? What do you even do with that many KitKats?” Another user wrote, ”Can a supply chain expert explain how losing 12 tons worth of KitKat bars doesn’t affect supply? Are the KitKat factories so efficient that they can just whip up a new 12 tons overnight?” One more user remarked, ”I’m seeing headlines every day that I thought I’d never see in my lifetime.” And others have continued responding to the news with memes and more questionable and hilarious reactions.

On Friday, the company confirmed that both the truck and its cargo remain unaccounted for.

It added that the stolen chocolate bars could potentially surface in unauthorized markets across Europe, but assured that each product can be tracked through its unique batch code.
