Emmanuel Macron said France was accelerating efforts to secure fuel and gas supplies as geopolitical instability continues to affect energy markets.
French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday said France was taking steps to secure its energy supplies amid heightened geopolitical tensions and disruptions in global energy markets.
“These same countries have reduced their consumption to adapt. So we need to be very vigilant and we don’t want to miss anything. So we replenished our gas stocks. We are securing our supplies. For example, in diesel we consume approximately 600,000 tonnes per day, half of which we import. Well, we will secure that,” Macron said.
“And so we have nothing to fear or frighten people. We must then tell the truth about geopolitical instability and what it creates in our country and we must prepare ourselves for this. This is exactly what France is doing and what it has accelerated in recent weeks,” he added.
Macron’s remarks came as France steps up efforts to safeguard fuel and gas supplies amid disruptions to global energy markets. The French government has identified diesel, jet fuel and natural gas as key areas requiring increased attention as geopolitical tensions affect energy supplies and prices.
France has also been working to replenish its gas reserves ahead of winter. Macron has said the country is on track to meet the European target for gas storage, while stressing the need to diversify supplies and prepare for further market disruptions.
The French president has also pointed to instability around the Strait of Hormuz, a major route for global energy shipments, as one of the factors putting pressure on international oil and gas markets. France has been seeking alternative sources and routes while working with energy-producing countries to secure supplies.
