US President Donald Trump named Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio among the prominent Republicans who could emerge as contenders for the 2028 presidential election, saying the party has a “great bench” of potential candidates.

In an interview, when Trump was asked who could run for president in 2028, he said it was too early to identify a clear front-runner but suggested that the Republican Party had several strong options.

“I could tell you who I think, but it’s a little bit early,” Trump said.

Asked about the names being discussed, he replied, “We have great names- you have JD Vance, Marco Rubio, and many others. We have a great bench; they have no bench.”

Trump’s remarks offer an early glimpse into the Republican Party’s possible succession debate, even as the US President remains in office. Vance, his vice president, and Rubio, his secretary of state, are among the prominent figures in the administration.

Trump On Russia-Ukraine War And Energy Security

While leaving for the Michigan rally, Trump also addressed the geopolitical and energy challenges arising from the Russia-Ukraine war. He said Washington would not allow global energy security to be held hostage by the conflict.

“We’re not going to be hostage with the oil industry over something that, frankly, should’ve never started,” Trump said, reiterating his view that the war could have been avoided.
