Search and rescue operations are underway after Russian strikes hit a shopping centre in Kryvyi Rih, with at least six people killed and nearly 100 injured.
At least 14 people were killed and 121 injured, including 22 children, after Russian drone strikes hit Kryvyi Rih, the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, on Friday, Ukrainian authorities said. Zelenskyy accused Russia of carrying out a suspected “double-tap” attack, in which a second wave of drones struck as emergency workers responded to the initial assault.
The attack targeted a shopping centre in Kryvyi Rih, as Russia intensified its aerial campaign against Ukrainian cities.
“Attacks like these are nothing less than terrorist acts,” Zelenskyy said in a social media post, while rescue teams continued to search the damaged area.
Deadly Russian attacks intensify
Kryvyi Rih has repeatedly been targeted since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. One of the city’s deadliest attacks took place in April 2025, when 20 people, including nine children, were killed.
Friday’s strike came a day after a major Russian barrage against Kyiv and surrounding areas killed at least 16 people and injured dozens. The assault continued for several hours and involved ballistic and cruise missiles as well as drones.
Ukrainian officials said around 38,000 people, including more than 2,000 children, sought shelter in Kyiv’s underground metro stations during the attack.
Residential buildings, a school, a children’s hospital and a kindergarten were among the structures damaged.
Zelenskyy said Russia had been preparing the assault for some time and had combined different types of missiles and drones to inflict extensive damage on civilian infrastructure.
Ukraine’s Air Force said it had shot down or suppressed 107 of the 135 Russian drones launched overnight.
In another Russian drone attack in the Kharkiv region, two women aged 73 and 66 were killed, while two other people were injured, regional authorities said.
The continued strikes have highlighted Ukraine’s air-defence challenges. Kyiv has repeatedly called on Western allies to provide additional US-made Patriot interceptor systems, which are among the few weapons capable of countering Russia’s ballistic missile attacks.
Ukraine strikes targets deep inside Russia
As Moscow continues its attacks on Ukrainian cities, Kyiv has expanded its long-range drone campaign against strategic targets inside Russia.
Zelenskyy said Ukrainian drones struck an oil refinery in Perm, more than 1,600 kilometres from Ukraine’s border, as well as the Marinovka military airfield in Russia’s Volgograd region.
Russian authorities confirmed damage at an industrial facility in Perm, without specifying the site. Russian outlet Astra reported that a refinery operated by Lukoil caught fire.
Ukraine has increasingly targeted Russian oil facilities in an effort to disrupt fuel production and exports, a key source of revenue for Moscow.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said its air-defence forces intercepted 325 Ukrainian drones across 15 Russian regions and Crimea.
