However, even if residents are ready to pay up, there is a catch – not all of them may be eligible to get a permit.
Soon, people may have to pay at least Rs 15,000 a year if they park their cars on public roads in front of their houses.
The government recently released the draft Greater Bengaluru Area (Parking) Rules, 2026 which allows corporations to levy a residential parking permit fee. The fee is based on the type of car and may go up to Rs 25,000.
However, even if residents are ready to pay up, there is a catch -– not all of them may be eligible to get a permit.
Those residents who stay in houses which have violated corporation bye-laws may not get a permit.
“Residential parking permits may be issued against a vehicle and a name associated with that vehicle number only for those residents living in residential buildings that are not in violation of minimum parking requirements specified in the building bye-laws,” the draft said.
The draft also mandated that residential property owners should make an adequate provision within their premises for parking of vehicles of their household or tenants in compliance with the building bye-laws.
There are two main areas the draft focuses on: increasing the number of parking spaces available for the public in the city by planning on-street parking and increasing off-street parking facilities; and regulating parking on-street in both residential and non-residential areas.
In non-residential areas, the city corporations will designate on-street parking zones.
However, all of them will be paid parking.
“No public parking space will be free of charge, except for bicycle parking and for autorickshaws parked in autorickshaws stands,” the draft said.
While parking will be completely prohibited on the main carriageway of arterial roads identified as high density corridors, parking on a few stretches of selected arterial roads will be prohibited only during the peak hours.
To prevent traffic bottlenecks and congestion around junctions, parking will be banned around at least 100 metres from a signallised junction on arterial and sub-arterial roads and at least 50 metres from a signallised junction on other roads.
That apart, parking of vehicles on streets shall be prohibited 25 metres on either side of a bus stop, access points to bus stations, railway stations and parking areas of metro stations and suburban railway stations, according to the draft rules.
The draft also aims to disincentivise use of private vehicles by levying a higher parking fee during peak hours and long hours.
