Ahead of the Cockroach Janta Party’s proposed march on October 10 against the SIR and electoral roll revision exercise, the Delhi Police has decided to ensure that there is no repeat of the violence witnessed in the national capital on July 20. For months, Jantar Mantar and adjoining areas have been under a prohibitory order. Apart from deploying over 15,000 police personnel, the Delhi Police has requisitioned more than 16,000 personnel from central paramilitary forces.
New Delhi already has around 10,000 paramilitary personnel deployed. In total, over 26,000 central paramilitary personnel will now be deployed in the capital city.
The Delhi Police has also called in 400–500 women personnel from central paramilitary forces to “manage” women protesters.
Over the past one week, New Delhi has witnessed several clashes between opposition parties and the police. Over 500 protesters have been detained, but all were subsequently released. Seventeen protesters were arrested, but a Delhi court later granted them bail.
The Delhi Police has also asked its officers to wear body cameras after a journalist alleged that she was groped by an ACP.
