‘Mind-Boggling’: Elon Musk-Linked Startup Tests Brain Implant That Could Fight Cancer In Humans

  • June 24, 2026

The underlying science of the implant relies on groundbreaking medical research proving that cancer tissue operates as an electrically active entity

The micro-implant works by reading the subtle, hyper-specific electrical properties of malignant masses while simultaneously emitting targeted electrical stimulation intended to stave off tumour development. Representational image

In a revolutionary leap for neurotechnology, a San Francisco-based longevity startup with close ties to Elon Musk’s Neuralink has commenced human testing of a specialised brain implant designed to detect and treat cancer. The company, Coherence Neuro, recently achieved a historic milestone by successfully testing its flagship device in three consenting patients, as per a Wired report. This pioneering procedure marks the first time a brain-computer interface (BCI) has been utilised specifically to track and disrupt the electrical signatures of aggressive tumours, signalling a profound shift in the global war against terminal illnesses.

The initial trials were conducted by briefly placing the button-sized implant into the brains of patients already undergoing surgical procedures for tumour removal. The device remained active for approximately thirty minutes to evaluate acute safety and signal clarity before being carefully extracted. By focusing its first clinical application on glioblastoma—a notoriously aggressive and terminal form of brain cancer—Coherence Neuro aims to transform oncological care from a sequence of brutal, systemic interventions into a continuously monitored and seamlessly managed condition.

Disrupting the Electrical Networks of Tumours

The underlying science of the implant relies on groundbreaking medical research proving that cancer tissue operates as an electrically active entity. Aggressive brain tumours are known to actively hijack the bioelectrical signals of healthy surrounding brain tissue to stimulate and accelerate their own growth. Coherence Neuro’s proprietary system, named SOMA, is engineered to intercept this process.

The micro-implant works by reading the subtle, hyper-specific electrical properties of malignant masses while simultaneously emitting targeted electrical stimulation intended to stave off tumour development. This dual-action hardware pairs with a coin-sized wearable worn over the ear and a mobile application, allowing clinicians to remotely monitor real-time data and adjust therapeutic stimulation without requiring patients to make exhausting, repetitive hospital visits.

The Neuralink Connection and Future Frontiers

Founded in 2022 by engineering doctorates Ben Woodington and Elise Jenkins, Coherence Neuro boasts deep structural links to the highest echelons of the neurotechnology sector. Neuralink’s head neurosurgeon serves as an active adviser and investor in the firm, and key investigators from Musk’s high-profile trials are slated to spearhead Coherence’s upcoming long-term clinical studies.
