Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan Opens Up in Exclusive Interview: ‘BJP is Trying Hard’

  • March 21, 2026

Ahead of Kerala’s elections, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed confidence in the LDF’s ability to secure a third consecutive victory. He highlighted significant developmental changes in the state, attributing them to successful projects initiated after 2016.

He also dismissed the BJP’s recent local election successes as minor.

Ahead of the upcoming election season in Kerala, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed confidence that the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) will secure a historic third consecutive term in power. In an exclusive conversation with Times Now, Vijayan highlighted what he described as a decade of transformative governance, pointing to major strides in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation across the state. He also spoke about the BJP’s chances in the state elections next month.

“All the people have a hope that is based on the experiences of the past. During these ten years, Kerala has undergone major changes in various fields. Kerala as a state has already gained the attention of the country. But many sectors have broken by 2016. There was a general belief that it could not be resolved. But after 2016, there was a significant change in that. Many projects that were thought to be impossible started happening,” he said.

The Kerala CM also discussed how there is an elevation in overall development. “In the first five years, our plan was to do developmental projects worth 50,000 crores, but when we completed the projects that we took, it came up to Rs 62,000 crores. In 10 years we did developmental projects worth Rs 1,16,000 crores. We have done multiple developmental projects in the education sector, roads, buildings, and hospitals. Through different projects, Kerala has seen significant development. When we look at Kerala’s development, we have spoken about overall development. In one place every sector is developing, other place, every family, every individual is getting the benefits of the development. That is Kerala’s development.”

Discussing the highlights of the state government, he shared how Kerala is the first to be declared an extreme poverty-free state. “The youth of Kerala, we want better life opportunities and employment opportunities. Better education opportunities to get a better job. We are hoping to create favourable situation for all of these factors,” he remarked.

‘One result cannot be seen as overall trend’: Vijayan

Addressing the Bharatiya Janata Party’s historic performance in last year’s local body elections, Pinarayi Vijayan downplayed the party’s gains, asserting that isolated wins do not translate into a broader political shift in Kerala.

“No, they haven’t reached there. The BJP is trying hard, but that won’t happen in Kerala. They did win a few places but don’t consider that their overall win. They haven’t got that support yet from the people of Kerala, but they are trying really hard,” he said.
