‘Kejriwal Nhi Jaa Rha’: AAP Chief Puts Rajya Sabha Speculation to Rest

  • June 24, 2025

Arvind Kejriwal, the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), dismissed rumors about his nomination to the Rajya Sabha, stating he will not join the upper house. Following AAP’s victories in Punjab’s Ludhiana West and Gujarat’s Visavadar, Kejriwal emphasized the importance of these wins, particularly after a recent defeat in Delhi.

Arvind Kejriwal said that the political affairs committee of the party will decide whom to nominate for the seat once Arora resigns to take charge as minister in Punjab government.

New Delhi: Arvind Kejriwal on Monday put speculation on him being nominated by the Aam Aadmi Party to Rajya Sabha to rest, asserting that he would not go to the upper house. “I want to tell you I am not going to the Rajya Sabha,” he said in a briefing after his party’s big win in Gujarat’s Visavadar and Punjab’s Ludhiana.
The AAP retained the Ludhiana West seat, with Rajya Sabha MP and industrialist Sanjeev Arora winning by a margin of over 10,000 votes. The bypoll was seen as a litmus test for the AAP, which has kept a low profile since its loss in the Delhi Assembly polls. The party had assured a ministerial post in the Punjab government once he wins, prompting speculations that the move is being planned to pave the way for Kejriwal’s entry into Rajya Sabha from Ludhiana.
When asked about speculations of him moving to Rajya Sabha, the AAP convener replied: “Many times I have been sent to the Rajya Sabha. I want to tell you I am not going to the Rajya Sabha”.

The 56-year-old added that the political affairs committee of the party will decide whom to nominate for the seat once Arora resigns to take charge as minister in Punjab government.
For Kejriwal, who has maintained a low profile since defeat in Delhi polls, retaining the Ludhiana West seat was a matter of prestige. He had increased presence in Punjab since February and was seen actively participating in rallies and inaugurations across the state. Senior AAP leaders are also fully engaged.

With Ludhiana West seen as home to the city’s industrialists, the Bhagwant Mann government has taken certain decision to appease the traders. These include forcibly ending the farmers’ protest at the Shambhu border to ensure there are no business disruptions.
Besides the Ludhiana West assembly seat, AAP also registered a victory in the Visavadar seat in Gujarat.
Gopal Italia, the former Gujarat president of the AAP, defeated his nearest rival, BJP candidate Kirit Patel, in the Visavadar seat of Junagadh district by a margin of 17,554 votes. While Italia received 75,942 votes, Patel got 58,388 votes after the end of 21 rounds of counting, according to the data shared by the Election Commission.
