A confirmed tornado was moving through northwestern Indiana on Thursday evening, prompting the National Weather Service (NWS) to maintain a Tornado Warning for northeastern Lake County. According to the NWS Chicago/Romeoville office, the tornado was located over Schererville, near Merrillville, at 7:25 PM CDT and was moving northeast at approximately 30 mph.
Forecasters warned that the tornado posed a significant threat to residents in its path, with the potential for damaging winds and flying debris. The agency said mobile homes could be damaged or destroyed, while roofs, windows and vehicles could also sustain damage. Tree damage was considered likely.
Communities in the projected path of the tornado included Merrillville, Hobart, Lake Station, and New Chicago, with Portage also expected to be impacted as the storm continued moving northeast.
The National Weather Service emphasized that the tornado had been confirmed by radar and urged residents to seek shelter immediately.
“To repeat, a tornado is on the ground. TAKE COVER NOW!” the weather agency said in its warning statement.
