Playing at the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium, Sukhjeet opened India’s account in the 12th minute with a field goal. He received a pass from Jugraj near the halfway line and showed excellent control to beat the Chinese goalkeeper.
China equallised in the 26th minute when Peng Yang converted a penalty corner to make it 1-1. However, India regained the lead just a minute later as Harmanpreet found the net with a powerful drag-flick from a penalty corner. Harmanpreet struck again in the 31st minute, converting another penalty corner to extend India’s lead to 3-1 before Sukhjeet completed his brace in the 34th minute, taking the score to 4-1.
China reduced the deficit courtesy of a goal by Chongkong Chen, who scored from a set piece in the 36th minute, but India remained in control, and Jugraj sealed the 5-2 win with another penalty-corner goal in the 47th minute.
India were the dominant side from the word go, enjoying 56 per cent possession and made 19 circle entries, compared to China’s eight.
