India is the world’s second-largest wheat producer.
The central government on Monday lifted the export ban on ban on wheat and its products with immediate effect, a move expected to ease the commodity’s availability in the international market.
The Directorate General of Foreign Trade issued notifications revising the export policy of wheat from “prohibited” to “free.”
The ban has also been removed on wheat flour and other products, including maida, semolina and wholemeal atta.
“The export policy of wheat… is revised from prohibited to free with immediate effect,” one of the notifications stated.
India, the world’s second-largest wheat producer, had imposed the ban in May 2022 to control rising domestic prices amid disruptions to the global supply chain caused by the Russia-Ukraine war. In February, the government had permitted limited exports of 25 lakh tonnes of wheat.
