A CELEBRATED college professor has died after being shot multiple times at his apartment building as authorities launch a manhunt for the suspected gunman.
Nuno F.G. Loureiro, a 47-year-old nuclear science, engineering, and physics educator at MIT, died on Tuesday after being admitted to Boston Hospital.

Brookline police responded to Loureiro’s apartment at around 8:30 pm on Monday after receiving reports of shots fired.
A neighbor recalled hearing sounds that sounded like gunshots on the night of the shooting.
“I thought at first it was somebody in our apartment kicking in a door or something, so I called the neighbors and they said no. They thought it was gunshots,” the neighbor, who asked not to be identified, told CBS News.
When authorities arrived, Loureiro was found with multiple gunshot wounds, Paul Campbell, Brookline police deputy superintendent, said.
Loureiro, a native of Portugal, was transported to Boston Hospital, where he died on Tuesday morning.
Anne Greenwald, another of Loureiro’s neighbor’s, said the professor had a young family who went to school in the area.
“It’s horrible, very scary,” Greenwald, who has lived in the neighborhood for 40 years, told CBS News.
Massachusetts State Police are investigating Loureiro’s death as a homicide.
Loureiro, the director of MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center, joined the prestigious university as a faculty member in 2016.
MIT mourned Loureiro’s death, saying in a statement, “Our deepest sympathies are with his family, students, colleagues, and all those who are grieving.”
The university added, “Focused outreach and conversations are taking place within our community to offer care and support for those who knew Professor Loureiro.”
A suspect has not been arrested as of Tuesday afternoon.
