GUN HORROR Nine dead and 38 hurt in shootings after bloody weekend across Chicago as Trump renews calls for military intervention

  • June 23, 2026

SEVERAL weekend shootings across Chicago have left at least nine dead and dozens injured, causing Donald Trump to call for military intervention in the nation’s third-largest city.

The carnage began on Thursday evening when two suspects allegedly opened fire on a large crowd in a drive-by shooting that left 13 people injured.

Over 20 shootings were reported in Chicago between Thursday and Sunday, leaving at least nine people with fatal injuries and over 30 injured.

Three shootings took place in Chicago on Thursday, with the first around 5:44pm leaving a 32-year-old man dead after he was approached by an unknown vehicle and shot multiple times in the abdomen, according to CBS News.

The second shooting occurred around 9:30pm and left a 30-year-old man taking himself to the hospital after being struck in the right foot by gunfire.

He did not provide details of the shooting to police.

In the third incident, police found a 14-year-old boy with multiple gunshot wounds around 11:30pm and transported him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Trump brought awareness to the over two dozen shootings, writing on Truth Social on Sunday morning, “Lots of Killing going on in Chicago.”

“Why isn’t Governor Pritzker calling me for help. I could make Chicago a safe City in ONE MONTH, in ONE YEAR, it would be one of the safest!!!”

The president went on to say Washington DC “went from one of the worst, to one of the safest cities in the U.S.”

Trump declared “Liberation Day” in the capital in August 2025 after he placed the DC police department under federal control and deployed the National Guard in an attempt to handle ongoing crime issues.

Trump later sent troops to other major US cities, including Chicago, Los Angeles and Portland before pulling them out and warning they could return.

The president deployed 300 National Guard members to Chicago in October following a frenzy of anti-ICE protests.

The withdrawal came after the Supreme Court ruled Trump could not use troops in Chicago for domestic law enforcement.

In one of the weekend incidents in Chicago, investigators believe two people in a red SUV began firing at a large crowd before fleeing the scene on Friday night in Princeton Park, according to ABC affiliate WLS.

Responding officers found a 32-year-old woman had been shot in the back twice while a 44-year-old man was grazed in the back four times.

The two victims were transported to local hospitals in good condition while ten others, ranging in ages 17 to 47, took themselves to nearby hospitals.

The youngest victim, a 17-year-old boy, sustained a gunshot wound to the thigh.

The victim count jumped up to 13 after police later revealed a 26-year-old man suffered unknown injuries during the drive-by shooting and refused medical treatment.

After the shooting, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson shared a statement on X thanking local law enforcement for their response.

“I am heartbroken by the violence in Princeton Park last night.

What should have been a night of celebration and community reflection for Juneteenth was shattered by a horrific act of violence,” Johnson said.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their loved ones.”

At least 11 shootings were reported on Friday between 4:30am and 11:11pm, with injuries ranging from gunshot wounds to the chest, arm, wrist, leg and face.

A 29-year-old man and 70-year-old man standing near a sidewalk were struck by gunfire from an unknown vehicle around 5:14pm.

The 29-year-old sustained several gunshot wounds to the body and face and was later pronounced dead at the hospital while the other man was in stable condition.

Two men, a 50-year-old and 34-year-old, were found in separate incidents with gunshot wounds to the chest and both died of their injuries.

Police were speaking with a person of interest in the case of the 34-year-old victim and a weapon was recovered from the scene of the 50-year-old victim, CBS reported.

An unresponsive 33-year-old man was found on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds to his body just before 9pm on Friday night. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Another eleven shootings occurred on Saturday between the hours of 12:15am and 11:30pm.
