Donald Trump was in attendance at the US Open final on Sunday where he was met with boos as he appeared on the big screens, but the president appeared distinctly underwhelmed by Carlos Alcaraz’s victory over Jannik Sinner

Donald Trump caused chaos at the US Open final on Sunday – and couldn’t bring himself to even clap after seeing Carlos Alcaraz triumph. The former president was spotted at Flushing Meadows, continuing his recent trend of attending major sporting events, including UFC, NASCAR and American football matches.
Trump was notably a prominent attendee at the final of the FIFA Club World Cup during the summer, even positioning himself front and centre during the trophy ceremony at MetLife Stadium. While he appeared to enjoy the football event, he looked decidedly unimpressed as Alcaraz celebrated his win over Jannik Sinner at the US Open final.
Trump caused the final to be delayed by 30 minutes after deciding to appear, with many fans subsequently unable to get into their seats on time. The US President didn’t join in the pre-match applause for Alcaraz, as he took on premier rival Jannik Sinner. Then, with tennis’ new big two in the heat of battle, Trump left his seat, just 90 minutes in – before some fans had even arrived due to the chaos outside.
He was back watching on as Alcaraz claimed victory however, but looked decidedly unimpressed as Alcaraz celebrated and applause from pretty much everyone in attendance met the Spaniard – Trump simply unable to bring himself to clap.
Body language expert Judi James said: “Trump’s reaction to a very excited and celebratory Alcaraz seems out of step with the rest of the crowd.”
She added: “As everyone is clapping and cheering Trump appears to hike his pants from the belt and perform a wry, closed lip, ironic-looking smile and pull at his jacket rather than clap.”
Before the match, Alcaraz, who went on to win, expressed his excitement about playing in front of Trump, stating that his presence was ‘great for tennis’.
Alcaraz said: “For me, playing in front of him… to be honest, I will try not to think about it. I don’t want myself to be nervous because of it. But I think attending the tennis match, it’s great for tennis to have the president into the final.”
He may not have felt that if he’d seen the moment where Trump was caught on camera with his eyes shut at one point, looking like he was catching up on sleep.
