Diljit Dosanjh’s Fans Call Out Racism After Met Gala 2025 Appearance; Express Outrage As He’s Denied Iconic Patiala Necklace Steeped in Heritage- Read To Know
At the 2025 Met Gala, Diljit Dosanjh turned heads with his stunning appearance in a custom ivory sherwani, paired with a traditional turban and Punjabi accessories. His look was widely appreciated for its elegance and authentic cultural representation. However, controversy soon followed when it came to light that Diljit was reportedly denied permission to wear the iconic Patiala necklace, a historic jewel originally commissioned by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala and designed by Cartier.
Fans expressed anger and disappointment, accusing the decision-makers of racial bias. Their frustration was heightened by the fact that the same necklace had previously been worn by American YouTuber Emma Chamberlain at the 2022 Met Gala. The necklace, once considered among the most extravagant pieces in the world, mysteriously disappeared in the 1940s before being recovered in parts and restored by Cartier.
The fact that it was allowed to be worn by a Western celebrity but not by an Indian artist led many to question the inconsistency and fairness of such decisions. Supporters of Diljit took to social media to voice their displeasure, stating that an Indian artist should have had the right to showcase a piece that is so deeply connected to Indian heritage.
Despite the controversy, Diljit’s debut at the Met Gala was celebrated for proudly presenting Punjabi culture on a global platform. His choice to wear traditional attire was seen as a strong and dignified expression of identity, which resonated with fans and fashion critics alike.
