Days After SC Asked Why BCCI Should Stay Out Of Sports Act, Board Reveals ₹3,000 Crore Tax Bill

  • September 19, 2026

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed that it pays a massive amount of ₹3000 in tax just days after the Supreme Court (SC) questioned why it should not be governed by the National Sports Governance Act.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Devajit Saikia has revealed that the Indian cricket governing body pays a massive ₹3,000 annually in income tax. The revelation came at the end of the board’s 95th Annual General Meeting, which took place on Friday (September 18) in Mumbai, inside their headquarters on the Wankhede Stadium premises.

“We are paying taxes amounting to Rs 3,000 crore on an average annually. This was read out at the AGM and there was a big round of applause from the members,” said Saikia in an interaction with reporters after the meeting ended.

The National Sports Governance Act Factor

The comments come at an interesting time as the BCCI is currently in a battle to ensure they stay outside the thresholds of the National Sports Governance Act, which was passed in 2025. Earlier this month, the Supreme Court (SC) questioned the world’s richest cricket board on why it should not be governed by the Act.

The matter comes down to the fact that, unlike other sporting bodies in the country, the BCCI does not rely on government grants and instead, as revealed by Saikia, is paying enormous amounts in taxes.

The board’s secretary claimed that the BCCI is waiting for the government to take action and is not trying to take measures to stay away from the Act’s provisions. He pointed out how cricket is not a designated sport in the Act yet.

“Regarding the Sports Act, our stand is very clear. There are a lot of things which have to be done by the concerned authority. Once those exercises are completed and once the BCCI comes under the Sports Act, a particular notification has to be issued to make it a designated sport,” Saikia explained.
